The Gunman - Review

In the first act of every movie, you are supposed to meet the characters and find out who they are and what they want. You are also supposed to understand the circumstances of the world the characters are in. The Gunman does a terrible job with its first act, and for that, the rest of the film is confusing, lacks focus and extremely boring. When characters do things based on the outcome of what happened in the first act, the movie becomes hard to follow and honestly, you don't care. It seemed like there were two movies going on at once with plots that were really underdeveloped which means that the film bounces between the two all the time and lacks focus. The main reason why I didn't leave the theatre was because of Sean Penn. He has the capability of being a Liam Neeson-like action star and I believe given the right script and director, he can pull it off. This movie had potential. Cool set pieces and the plot seems interesting on paper except the execution was awful. So many unnecessary scenes, characters, subplots that don't go anywhere and an unexplained backstory that acts as the main drive for the film, this movie is a mess. Save your money folks!
