Pocahontas - Review

Out of all the 90's Disney movies, this may be my least favorite... and probably the movie I watched the most when I was a child. It's always a gamble going back to a movie you used to watch over and over as a kid because I'm sad to say that this film is pretty one-note. Pocahontas herself is beautiful and free-spirited who wants a life of spontaneity rather than stability... haven't we already seen that with Princess Jasmine? Her character is not particularly interesting and I do believe that they focused more on animating her hair rather than her personality or character. However, she ain't as boring as John Smith and Governor Ratcliffe. However, my biggest worry is that this movie brings us a story that is so predictable but doesn't tell it in a unique and fun way. At least with Hercules, the story, while similar was made fresh by the wacky art direction, the choice to have gospel music, Hades sounding more like a car salesman or a sports agent rather than a typical bad guy. Here, everything is played pretty straight with almost no twists or turns. Just a competent children's film that gets lost in the library of far more superior Disney films.
