Ray - Review

It is always hard to review a musical biopic because many of them have the same formula or they all seem to mesh together. However, Ray has something that no other film has, and that is Jamie Foxx as Ray. I have heard the joke that Jamie Foxx was so good at playing Ray Charles, that the world decided that we didn't need Ray Charles anymore because we have his younger version here in the flesh. Jamie Foxx as Ray is mesmerizing. Much like Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, this movie is worth the price of and admission based solely on one performance. He can capture the young and energetic entertainer and the emotionally damaged heroin addict while still bringing a layer of empathy. Add on top of that, Jamie Foxx sold the "blind" aspect of Ray Charles' character wonderfully. And sure, you can see the lesson about drugs and loyalty to one's family coming, but the movie is so engaging that you don't even care. A movie that will make you sing, and a movie that will make you cry, Jamie Foxx delivers his best performance in the wonderfully told and extremely captivating journey of Ray Charles. This is a great movie!
