Bad Words - Review

Much like Yesterday from 2019, this film brings us a very unique premise! A 40-year-old genius who never passed the seventh grade who has one of the worst potty-mouths I have heard for the main character in ages enters a spelling bee. Why would he do such a thing? Well, I dare not give it away because I think that Andrew Dodge has created a story with a surprising amount of humanity and heart. Jason Bateman is great in the lead role as one of the most hatable and yet tragic leads in a comedy film and his chemistry with a child actor, Rohan Chand, is hilarious. I found myself laughing many times in this movie but I also found myself getting emotionally invested. But just like Yesterday, this is a cute movie. Everything in it reaches that level of "solid" but doesn't ever get up to "spectacular" status. But, a solid movie is a solid movie and Bad Words gets a thumbs up from me!
