Black Mass - Review

Right off the bat, the trailer for this film made it seem like it was going to be a masterpiece. The fast-editing, the awesome song, and of course, Johnny Depp's amazing performance. One of those things actually made it into the movie and that was Johnny Depp's performance. Truly spectacular! I haven't seen acting this good since Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler. Just a crazy, disgusting but yet also very smart and humble man. A strange mix but he pulls it off. Johnny Depp's best performance since Jack Sparrow... the first time he did it. The rest of the cast are really great too. Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, etc. all have great scenes and moments to shine. The first hour was really gripping and intriguing. I was totally invested in the story and was constantly asking, what's gonna happen next? The second hour, however, started to lose it's intrigue and started to drag. I can't put my tongue on it but my best guess is that the scene's started to overlap and it felt like the film wasn't showing us anything particularly new. So overall, this definitely felt like oscar bait. A blank canvas for the actors to show how good they can act. 2015, American Hustle. Although Johnny Depp's performance is sensational and kills it in every scene he's in, this film doesn't have the re-watchability factor in its favour. I'm glad I got to see this movie, I just don't think I'm gonna watch it again. Save this one for Netflix or a cheap Tuesday.
