Hyena Road - Review

I don't even know where to begin. I was excited to see this movie because I've seen so many American war films and this one was about Canada's part in the war in Afghanistan. And I will admit, there is a story here. Given the right director and screenwriter, this could have been an interesting film. At times, Hyena Road did deliver intensity, drama, and intrigue but unfortunately, these scenes are few and far between. The rest is full of boring military jargon, a love story with some of the most cringeworthy dialogue since the Star Wars prequels, inconsistent visual styles and characters that we simply do no know or care about whatsoever. Paul Gross is not a bad actor at all, but as a director and especially as a screenwriter, he isn't very good. This film had potential and it did have some interesting parts, but I hope better Canadian military movies are to come.
