Mean Girls - Review

I hear, "Oh my god. High school is nothing like the movies" all the time. Well, then they clearly didn't go to my high school because Mean Girls gave me a pretty accurate representation of what I had to endure growing up. Sure, the popular girls at my school didn't do a dance to Jingle Bell Rock at the school's talent show and I don't know if the popular girls had rules about wearing Pink on Wednesdays, but spreading rumours, shit-talking behind people's backs, and grand schemes to get people to break up were all present. However, while the popular girls may have been the most notorious at it and conducted these schemes on larger scales, everyone did this in high school, including me. And while I was a victim of bullying for about 12 years of my life, I'd be lying if I didn't partake in some drama or the occasional gossip. So this film is very relatable, unfortunately, it was for all the wrong reasons. My cafeteria was set up into groups and very few times did people venture outside those groups. Also, everyone knew who the popular girls were. We don't know why they were popular... okay we all knew why they were popular. Whether they always had the nicest clothes or simply developed early, everyone knew who they were. As a film, though, Mean Girls is absolutely hilarious. While a movie like Clueless had dialogue that was satirical and maybe a bit more smart, Mean Girls throws punch after punch of good quality, quotable jokes. It's so "Fetch". I laugh every single time I watch this movie and it never gets old. Like Clueless, this movie has a great message in that it's easy to gossip your way out of any situation and popularity may be important to you in your younger teen years, but trust me, by your senior year, nobody cares. I was sitting in the cafeteria doing some homework in my final year and one of the girls that was automatically popular in freshman year sat beside me and we ended up chatting. In grade 8, it was social suicide for a popular girl to be seen taking to me, I'm just being honest. However, nobody gives a shit anymore once you hit your senior year and get out of high school. Some people will still judge, don't get me wrong, but trust me when I say that those types of people are going nowhere in life. Be nice to people. Easy as that. Oh, and this movie is hilarious too! Great performances, great jokes, all around great movie.
