The Hateful Eight - Review

Get your hate mail ready... I liked this movie. It sucks that we live in a world where you can get criticized about liking a movie instead of loving it. But I digress. The Hateful Eight is stuff we've seen Tarantino do before. Telling a story out of order, characters talking about things that generally don't have anything to do with the plot, Samuel L. Jackson and lots and lots of blood. There are three reasons why this film didn't blow me out of the water or top my 'Favourite Tarantino films' list. One was the use of violence. Now I've seen the excessive violence in his movies before and I quite liked it but here, not only is there a lot of bloodshed but it's really gross. Characters who puke blood and people's guts getting sprayed on other characters and having it get stuck in their hair and teeth. Yuck. Two, the large usage of the N word bothered me here. In Django Unchained, it felt necessary for the characters to use it so often but here, I feel like Tarantino was writing the script and said to himself, "Let's see how many N****'s I can needlessly cram in here." Third was that the first act was a snooze fest. I normally love Tarantino characters and hearing them converse with each other but here, I was bored most of the time. At about the half way point, the film really picked up for me but it took a while to get there. All in all, I'm glad I saw this film. Would I see it again? Probably not.
