Deadpool - Review

Oh boy.... I've pissed off the cinephiles with "okay" reviews of "The Hateful Eight" and "The Revenant", and now I'm gonna piss off the fanboys... I thought "Deadpool" was a fun movie. Was it amazing like everyone said it was? To me, it wasn't. Just because you break the fourth wall doesn't make your movie spectacular. It's funny sure, but not enough to praise it as the second coming of Christ. But, what did I like about the movie? Well, I liked the cast. Ryan Reynolds with his dead-pan sense of humour is fun to watch and his compadres are fun to watch too. The action was well done and it was cool to see Vancouver in a big film like this. Most of the jokes poking fun at Wolverine and The Green Lantern, I saw coming a mile away. Sure it was cool to see a self-aware superhero but I knew the jokes about taking your girlfriend to the theatre thinking it was a romance movie were coming. They weren't that clever. In something like Kingsman: The Secret Service, they were satirizing James Bond but they didn't do it in a way that was pretentious. Both films kind of had a similar soundtrack incorporating 80's songs into their action sequences; which is always a plus and the action scenes have a similar feel to them. Also, the villain was kind of weak. Not much to say there. Overall, I'm glad I saw "Deadpool" and if it comes out on Netflix, I'd probably see it again. But it ain't a superhero masterpiece. Sorry.
