X-Men: Apocalypse - Review

Before going into this movie, I was a bit worried because of the bad reviews. But, I went in with an open mind and I walked away generally satisfied. This film follows the events of Days of Future Past and acts as a great segway from this era of X-Men into the original trilogy. However, I feel like I need to address the bad press for this movie. One complaint I hear is that Jennifer Lawerence phones in her performance. Unfortunately, I have to agree with it, but it doesn't bog down the movie in any way. It isn't really distracting. Two, Apocalypse isn't the most interesting character out there. This is true also, but mean, he's just kinda cool. Does he have the most interesting of backstory or tragedy associated with him? Not at all. But I find it extremely refreshing to have a villain with the most simple of motivation that is to, "take over the world". In his mind, he is a god and when he wakes from his ever lasting slumber, he is disgusted to see "his world". Lastly, Magento seems like he is going in cycles or at least treading water in his beliefs in these movies. He never really grows. He just stays the same way with the same ideology. Humans will always hate mutants. Will he revert back to his old ways of hating humanity in the next film... you bet your ass he will. What I really like were the castings of the younger X-Men from the original trilogy. Young Gene Grey, Nightcrawler, Psyclops, all added a nice fresh feel to the franchise. Also, they KILLED IT with another FANTASTIC Quicksilver sequence. In a world where many superhero films are trying to be as realistic as possible and as dark as possible, it was kind of nice to see a bit of schlock. A good mix of the fun tone of MCU films and the darkness of some of the DC films. Overall, this is a film made for the X-Men fan. If you have never seen any X-Men films, I'm sorry to say that you might just get left in the dust, but if you have done your mutant research, this movie is pretty enjoyable.
