I can't think of a movie that sucked me in as much as this one did in the first 5 minutes. John Cusack's Rob Gordon is one of the most relatable characters I think I've ever seen on screen. With his sarcastic delivery and his constant 4th wall breaking, I was hooked immediately. Now, if this movie was like it's first 30 minutes, I would have given it a 5/5. no problem. Unfortunately, the film doesn't stand up to the first 30 minutes at all. This movie is about a break-up, but we don't really know anything about the girl or the relationship to really care. Plus, this movie isn't so funny that you don't really care about the relationship so it ends up becoming a little boring. Jack Black plays... Jack Black and has some great moments, but the side characters are pretty forgettable. Some strange appearances from Tim Robbins and Catherine Zeta-Jones but they also have memorable parts. When I watched this film for the first time, I was in love with it. However, two years later, it does not have the same impact what so ever. To me, this film had so much potential. John Cusack talking to the audience is so relatable that if the film was just that, I honestly think it could have worked. But, you have to add in the break-up story that doesn't have nearly the same emotional attachment as a (500) Days of Summer or even have the laughs like a better break-up movie, Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I'd say watch a trailer and go in at your own risk. Many people like this movie and I can understand why for me it's just unfortunate that the boring moments outweigh the entertaining ones.
