This is the best movie of the year! Finally, I can say that I have seen a 5-star picture in theatres in 2016! The Magnificent Seven is an awesome, kick-ass western movie that is a ton of fun. The cast is full of all-star talent and they have great chemistry together. You really feel like you know these characters even though they don't all get equal screen-time. This is how Suicide Squad should have felt. Also, this is some of the best action I've seen all year long. The gun battles are intense and full of energy and some of the best I've ever seen. As I'm writing this, I realize I say that a lot, but those moments were the most fun I had in a theatre this year. Lastly, a new segment I am trying to address in these reviews is why this film was even made. Thinking in strictly film school visual theory, what is the dialectic synthesis of this movie (Aesthetic + Function = Whether or not you should see this movie). For the aesthetic, this film looks beautiful. The landscapes are gorgeous and the score is really well done. A really romanticized version of the wild west, but I loved it. For its function, I haven't seen the original so I can't comment on how the two stand next to each other. Although, being someone who hasn't seen many westerns, the plot is fairly simple. Bad guy reeks havoc in small town, a band of misfits join together to rid the land of that same bad guy. You've seen this story before with the villain not getting much backstory and much depth and a hero who's motivation is fairly simple. So that makes this film feel recycled right? Wrong. This film works on its own because all of the characters are likable, the film is amazing to look at, it's action-packed, and most importantly, entertaining from beginning to end! So far, the best movie of the year!
