It is very rare that I will go see a film in theatres without doing some previous research. Normally I will research who is in it, who directed it, if it has an oscar buzz or even if it is rated fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. I didn't do any of that. I saw one commercial on TV that had Brad Pitt in a movie about Nazis. I had seen two of those before (Inglorious Basterds and Fury) and I was in. It was pretty refreshing walking into this movie not knowing anything because I was pleasantly surprised. Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard are both excellent in their roles and their romance is very genuine. I should mention that too, this film is a romance first and a war thriller second. The first half of the film is all about the romance blooming between the two of them while the second half is where both their loyalties are put into question. That is where the intrigue comes into play. This film also looks stunning. I am a big fan of the World War II French Morocco aesthetic. Men in fancy suits, women in fancy dresses, swinging jazz in a fancy nightclub and add in some uncertainty with some Nazi Officers at the bar, what's the word I'm looking for... fancy. Love the 1940's aesthetic. So a big plus to the production design. Also, as a Canadian, I'm glad to see my country get some recognition in Hollywood as Brad Pitt's character is very much Candian but stationed in London. Overall, this film is very romantic and very intriguing and very well made cinematically (simply meaning it looks nice). However, for me, it lacks the re-watchability factor. I'm very glad I saw this film but don't think I would watch it again for a long time. It's just not one of those movies, however, I believe this is a great film that should be seen at least once.
