Fences - Review

Oh boy, this one is a talker. If you are a person who doesn't like it when the whole film is just characters that talk about life in their house/front porch/backyard, then this is not the film for you. This is a film to really appreciate the acting. Denzel and Viola Davis are both outstanding in their roles as well as the rest of the cast. What I appreciate is the attention to detail with the dialect and speech of the characters. It seems like that's how people talked in 1950's Pittsburgh. Attention to detail on the way characters acted, the clothes they wore and the lifestyles they lived. At first, the dialogue was all on point. I was thinking to myself, "Wow, this is great writing and the acting really elevates it too." Then the phrase, "Too much of a good thing" came into my head, because yes, you get to see great acting the whole time, but you really start to feel it's length at times. Maybe it's just my age and all these whole, "purpose of my life" questions haven't caught up to me yet. I don't know. All I can say is that after a while, this film got really dry. Much like Bridge of Spies did for me last year. Both films had great acting and dialogue, but couldn't keep my attention very long. So for that reason, I'm giving it a 3/5. I liked it, and believe that an acting oscar may come its way.
