Live By Night - Review

The first must-see movie of 2017 is here! Ignore the Rotten Tomatoes ratings on this one. I honestly don't get it. Anyways, it's going to be hard to review this film without giving any spoilers, because I want people to come into this film without knowing anything about it. With that being said, I say go see it. If you want to know more, I'll tell you. Still no big spoilers so don't worry. Much like a film that came out a couple months ago, Allied, this film looks absolutely brilliant. Tampa in the late 20's and early 30's looks absolutely beautiful. Although it was a period piece, I was thinking to myself, "I'm looking up flights to Tampa after this film is over." The production design, cinematography and overall look and feel to this film is so beautiful. I'm also glad that although this plot has been done before, there are enough twists and unique elements in it to make it feel fresh. I'm glad this wasn't yet another Boston/New York/Chicago/LA gangster story, this is a Tampa gangster story. Can't say I've seen any of those (Scarface with Al Pacino is Miami 1983.. sorry fellas). While the location and plot do a great job of making the film interesting and look nice, Ben Affleck really makes this film shine. His directing style along with his great action scenes, and his very charismatic acting. Many people think Ben Affleck is a pretty "one-note" kind of actor... but I have to say, that note is very on-pitch. You really care for this guy! With all those things, along with a good musical score, you get one hell of a good movie! So far, best of the year!
