Ferris Bueller's Day Off - Review

I had watched this movie as a 14-year old and thought it was "okay". Watching it now, this is one of the best movies ever made. Quite the jump right? In my third year of film school, I wrote a film called "Roses for Jennifer". A story about a nerd trying everything in his power to ask out the hot new girl on Valentine's Day. I wanted to create a love letter to the teen movies of the 80's and 90's and without even realizing it, I took so much inspiration from this movie because this film has the best kind of humour, dry and sarcastic. Also adding in quick cutaways. It's simple screenwriting at it's finest. "Ferris Bueller is sick" quickly cut to a clip of him dancing. Setup - Payoff. It also helps that all these jokes are downright hilarious in their simplicity and subtlety. I could end the review right there because I wouldn't want to ruin the jokes, but I have to give praise to the cast, especially Matthew Broderick. So strange because other than this, I really do not like him as an actor. I just think of him in Inspector Gadget and wonder how he could have strayed so far from his funny days in films as perfect as this one. Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a perfect movie. I don't say that often, but the word "perfect" fits this movie extremely well! A must watch!
