40 Year Old Virgin - Review

Can I just say right off the bat that this is one of the best movie posters of all time? Like, Steve Carrell's face is just too priceless. Anyways, onto the movie. Steve Carrell is great! This might be my favourite role of his. I know everyone loves him in Anchorman, and I personally loved him in The Big Short, but in my eyes, Andy from The 40 Year Old Virgin is his best character. Not only does he pull off the action figure collecting nerd very well but he also brings a lot of humanity to the role and is very sweet and charming. He also can drop the one-liners pretty well too. That is the kind of humour we are dealing with here. The one--liners, the drunk humour, jokes about alcohol, sex and all that crazy stuff. It's not as clever as Little Miss Sunshine or Hot Fuzz, but it's just a different type of humour. What I like is that it seems like these jokes are written and not just improvised. Sure, improv can be funny but when you see the wheels turning in the actors heads while trying to think of something funny to say (Ghostbusters) it can get really annoying. It's also nice to see a bunch of actors here before they were really famous. This was the movie that really launched Seth Rogen into the mainstream, but they are also accompanied by a young Kat Dennings and a young Jonah Hill that makes a cameo. Even Kevin Hart shows up for a bit! That was nice to see. Paul Rudd, Jane Lynch, Leslie Mann, Elizabeth Banks, and more show up. A big comedic get together. No Will Ferrel though... unless I missed him. Overall, this is a fun movie. Movies dealing with sex can come off really obnoxious or really charming and actually funny. Thankfully, this film is the ladder.
