VIDEO REVIEW COMING SOON!
This is the perfect example of a cult movie! Blade Runner is a pretty famous movie, but only really beloved by a certain type of people. As for me, I think I'm too dumb for this movie. Really, I do. This film deals with so many huge questions about humanity, and life itself and they are all dealt via metaphor and symbolic imagery. Now, I know it's there, but it just doesn't speak to me. This movie is made for people to think about and analyze. My mom is an english teacher and Blade Runner is one of the books she reads with her students and has discussions about the major themes. For me, I just got a confusing and excitement lacking plot with characters I didn't understand or care about. It lacked the emotional connection with the audience. If I like the characters and want to see them succeed, there is really no story too dumb or complex I won't watch. The first Star Trek film (1979) dealt with the complex subject matter, but I like Kirk, Spock, Bones etc. that I kept watching. Deckard and Rachel and other Replicants (kind of like the synthetics from Alien) have little to no personality. What I enjoyed, however, was the world. Los Angeles, 2019 looks so incredible and for the time, these are some amazing effects. Add in some good ol' 80's synthesizer for the score and you got your self A+ world building. This film feels more like a piece of art rather than a movie. Yes, filmmaking is an art form, but I believe that people don't watch Blade Runner for the entertainment value and the excitement, they watch it because it makes them think and, for lack of a better way of describing it, it looks and feels really cool. Just know that this isn't Star Wars or Aliens or E.T. This movie will get you thinking. However, it felt like I was trying to comprehend a lesson in high school and failing miserably. I just couldn't understand it.
