Daddy's Home - Review

After watching the trailer for the sequel coming out, and hearing from some fellow film students that this movie isn't actually that bad and is pretty funny, I decided to give Daddy's Home a chance. The result was a mildly entertaining movie that made me laugh a few times, made me extremely uncomfortable in some parts and would probably not recommend. I knew how this movie was going to end from the very first scene. As soon as Will Ferrell, who isn't terrible here, explains how he loves being a dad and that is all he ever wanted to be, you know exactly how this movie is going to turn out. However, there are only so many story arcs that you can do and to watch a familiar one can be fun to watch if the film has creative jokes and likable characters. Unfortunately, most of the jokes in this film seem very cheap. It's like the writer's said, "How many times can we make Will Ferrell's character look stupid, embarrassed, ashamed or even ways to literally kill him?" Well, they find plenty of ways and I'm sorry but for me, these jokes were way too mean spirited. Also, coming from personal experience, I don't like seeing a character I route for losing his wife or girlfriend to the guy who comes into the picture trying to be nice but only has one goal in mind, and that is to drive our main character out of the picture. I know how that feels, and I hate seeing it on camera. Obviously, this is a family-ish comedy and you know it will all work out in the end, but still, you have to sit through and hour and a half uncomfortable mean-spirited humour. I am looking forward to the sequel, but I probably will never watch this movie again.
