So I Married An Axe Murderer

You ever have it where you grow up watching a certain movie laughing at all the jokes and having a great time watching it every time? Then to watch it again ten years later and think to yourself what in God's name made you think that this was a good movie? Well, this didn't happen to me with So I Married An Axe Murderer. This happened to my youngest cousin Kyle when he recommended we watch this movie up at his cabin. I had heard about this movie only through him and the only time I had ever seen a copy of this movie was at his cabin. So something right away told me that this could mean one of two things. One, my cousin had discovered a hidden gem that flew under the radar and was going to provide some great laughs, or two, there is a reason why nobody talks about this movie anymore and that's because it sucks. Unfortunately, it was number two. After watching the movie, he apologized stating that it was funnier when he watched it as a kid. I could end the review right there by telling you this movie isn't funny, but I'll attempt to explain why. Mike Myers is a funny dude, but I realized that the reason why everyone thinks so is because what he is actually saying isn't funny, but the way he delivers the lines and the awkward pauses and reactions are what make us laugh. Think of the scene in Austin Powers when Dr. Evil has the evil laugh that goes on too long. It's not the weird laugh that makes us laugh, it's how long it goes and challenges our expectations. Here, Mike Myers will just yell in a Scottish accent (haven't seen that one before...) and hold a pause afterwards. Or, this one really irritates me, he will go into a room and look around and be amazed of how big it is, say, "the only thing this room needs is a giant poster of Atlantic City." Right away I'm thinking, "Gee, what the f*** do you think is going to happen next?!" The camera pans to show a giant poster of Atlantic City. Sorry guys, nice try. I will give it props though for having a somewhat unique presence. A killer is on the loose and Mike Myers doesn't know if the new love of his life if the murderer. So he is constantly on edge and there are so many innuendoes that make him always second guessing himself. For that premise alone, it's watchable and could have been a fun little movie if it was a different actor with a different style of comedy. Maybe something like a Jason Bateman, Horrible Bosses type humour with this premise would have been good. Hey TriStar Pictures! I got an idea for a reboot! For this version of this story right now, I'd say give it a skip.
