The Amazing Spider-Man - Review

Right off the bat, I think Andrew Garfield is the best version of Spider-Man, but the worst version of Peter Parker. Andrew Garfield can pull off the cockiness and the funny quips while in the suit and mess around with bad guys (even though it becomes a problem in the sequel). Tobey Maguire had some of those moments but Garfield has got him beat as Spidey there. Andrew Garfield doesn't work as a Peter Parker for me because he is too good looking and doesn't really come across as a sympathetic nerd. He skateboards and is fairly fashionable, and his mannerisms are while awkward yes, but not really science nerd-like. Sure, he is really smart but I don't know. I couldn't see this Peter Parker getting bullied at my high school. As for the movie, it's fairly enjoyable. Many people complain about the origin story but to be honest, I like the Spider-Man origin story. Sure, I know exactly how it goes, but in my eyes, once you see why a superhero do the things they do, then you become more invested in the story. The first Spider-Man film did that very well and a different recent example is Wonder Woman. So the origin story itself is told fairly well and the romance between Gwen Stacy and Peter Parker is romantic and nice to see, but from there we get a villain with no character motivation, a Spider-Man suit which looks kind of dumb and a conflict of tones. That's about all I have to say about this one. It's a mediocre Spider-Man movie with some enjoyable parts and some not so enjoyable parts. I know that sounds super vague, but honestly, this film didn't leave me with much. Where the first Spider-Man film made me feel uplifted, this film made me say, "Yeah, it was okay." Big difference.
