Dunkirk - Review

I don't give films "half" ratings, but if I did, then Dunkirk would get a 3.5/5. "WHAT?! Brandon! Another "obvious" 5/5 film and you "HATE" it?!" To answer that question before it's even asked, I liked this film. I did not love it, or can't say I really liked it. I can say that it's a good movie that looks phenomenal. I know some of my fellow film student graduates are going to love all the shots in this movie. While I don't pay attention to that side as much as some film buffs do, they cinematography is extremely well done. Now that I mention it, this film is a technical masterpiece. From the cinematography I mentioned before, to the very unique sounding score with the constant ticking and the great directing from the dogfights in the air to the sinking of British Naval ships, Christopher Nolan knows how to make a damn good looking movie. So why don't I love it? The only real thing I can put my finger on is how the story is told. Christopher Nolan does not tell this story in chronological order. He tries to tie the scenes together via theme, emotion or with similar things happening. While some people, like my father, could understand it, I sometimes was scratching my head wondering what was going on. This film is more visually stunning rather than entertaining. You go to see this film for the technical marvel rather than the characters and the story. If you are a World War II junkie or a film buff who is fascinated by 70mm cameras or film sound, then this film is for you. If you are just an average bloke, then you will still enjoy it, but don't go in expecting a masterpiece.
PS - Funny I see this film on the same day some random stranger came up to me and said that I look like a Nazi... Not even kidding. To his point, I am 6'7", have short blonde hair, blue eyes, white skin and am from German descent, so yes, I do look German, but that's like saying to another white man that you look like a klansman. You just don't say those things dude.
