Get Out - Review

I normally don't like horror movies. I have never seen any of the Paranormal Activity movies or anything really along those lines. However, one of my buddies almost had a heart attack when he found out that I hadn't seen this. So after his recommendation and seeing that it has near perfect scores on many of the big movie review websites, I gave it a watch and I have to agree with everyone, this is a great movie. This doesn't feel like your typical horror movie where 4 teenagers all go into the woods with no cell phone and act extremely stupid and all get killed off. This movie feels like some actual thinking went into it. The scariness comes from the suspense and intrigue, not jump scares and gory imagery. To be honest, nothing really scary happens until half way through the movie, but you can just tell that something is off. The way that everybody is talking and acting towards our main character Chris just makes you feel really uncomfortable. Now, I don't know if that is supposed to be an allegory for how we white folk treat black people in the real world and this movie is supposed to make us realize how rude we are, but it makes for an interesting and creepy plot. Another reason why this film rises above the typical horror film is that the acting is really good from the entire cast. Sure, the brother of the main family may be a bit over-the-top, but this is a very well-acted movie. I could also tell that Jordan Peele directed this movie because of some of the comedic moments. Yes, there are a few of those in here and in my opinion, it makes the movie even better for people who may not entirely be into horror movies. The comedy acts as a good transition piece for people not a fan of the genre but still want to see this movie. That being said, horror fan or not, this is a great movie to watch. If you are a fan of films like Shutter Island, then Get Out is for you.
