The Full Monty - Review

This is a story about how far a man will go for the love of his friends and his son. After the steel factories of a small British town go under, men everywhere are looking for work. Now, to save marriages, joint custody of children or to simply feel alive again, six men come together... to create a strip show. Yes, you heard correct. This is a movie about male strippers that are willing to go the full monty (show "everything"). For me, I like that this film takes place in England because British humour is very different than American humour. American humour can be very dumb and raunchy while British humour tends to be more subtle, quick, ironic, and smart. For this movie, I think the subtle comedic tricks of British filmmaking really elevate the humour. For example, there is a scene where they are holding auditions and one of the men has an extremely large package. If this was an American Hollywood movie, you may hear some guy swear and make some jock inspired joke about how long it is and how he could do some nasty things to some lady, but since it's a British movie, they do something clever. Tom Wilkinson plays one of the characters trying to recruit another dancer and the man with the big package was one of his past employees. So he hides his face with a newspaper only to look around at his colleague's faces and they are all in shock. Naturally, his curiosity takes over and he takes a peek. That's how they get re-introduced. Just a bit more clever than your standard comedy which is why I really like this movie. It's extremely funny, the characters are super likable, it's got a great soundtrack and one of the funniest endings of a movie next to Little Miss Sunshine. This is definitely a great comedy that not too many people know about, at least the people I talk to. So if you're looking on Netflix for something different and funny, look no further than The Full Monty!
