It's weird to think how Paul Feig, the man that directed one of my most hated films of all time (Ghostbusters 2016) made an incredibly funny movie like Bridesmaids. However, I think he had little to do with it because this movie was very well written and it warranted these funny actors to ad-lib. This means that the script gave the actors distinct personalities and gave them situations for improv. It wasn't just pointing a camera and telling the actors to say funny things, it was giving them some hoops to jump through. For example, there is a funny scene where Annie (Kristen Wiig) gets really drunk on an airplane and causes nothing but problems for the passengers and the flight attendants. It's not funny because she's drunk and saying dumb things. It's funny because of what her character is going through and her acting this way is not only hilarious, but it services the story. She is trying to get her best friend back and she is very bitter to Helen (Rose Byrne), that's why she acts the way she does, not because the director told her so. That's the main reason why this movie works. It has a great story that we can all relate to, dealing with jealousy and it really is hilarious. I sometimes say this is the women's version of The Hangover. Now, I'm not going to sit here and pretend like I know how women talk when men are not around and that I know what women think (I don't think anybody knows that), but this film really feels like it understands how women act and talk. The down-to-earth woman, the squeaky clean woman who has only had sex with one man, the mom who wants to re-live her slutty college years and the incredibly rich woman with an absolute fake personality. I've met all these women before and this movie really captures the essence of all of 'em. However, I'm not too sure I've ever met a woman quite like Melissa McCarthy in this movie. By the way, she is one of the funniest characters in film history. So much so that she got an Oscar nomination. She is that good. So with that being said, this movie is incredibly funny and I would recommend it to everybody. Not just women, not to couples on date night, but even dudes can enjoy this movie. It's one that will be funny for a long time!
