It - Review

I'm going to say this right off the bat, I don't watch horror movies or let alone see them in theatres. Growing up, I would always get scared way too easily so naturally, I just stayed away from horror movies. Over the past couple years, I've started to open up a bit more to scary movies such as The Exorcist or Scream, so I decided that I would give "IT" a try. A movie hasn't really warranted this much hype all year and I haven't seen a good movie in theatres really since Baby Driver, so I decided to suck it up and check "IT" out. As soon as the commercials started playing before the movie, I noticed that the sound was cranked abnormally loud. Louder than it usually is. I immediately thought to myself, "Oh boy, here we go. This film is really going to play up the jump scares and just blast the sound effects." I was absolutely right. I noticed throughout the movie that I never once closed my eyes, but I was plugging my ears quite a bit. I'm not really a fan of movies that try to scare you with cheap gimmicks like that and there are quite a few of them here. Other than that, this film is rather entertaining. All of the child actors are really good in this and they talk like actual kids talk. The typical group with the girl who everyone thinks is a slut, the new kid who is fat and lonely, the kid who stutters, the kid who is always afraid of being sick, and the nerdy looking kid who just happens to learn about sex jokes and really offensive humour before everybody else does. They are a fun group of kids and they seem real. Not to mention you have to have a homeschooled black kid in there. The one character that seemed a bit out of place was the main bully of the town. This guy is just pure evil. Driving around town to carve names into kid's stomach with a pocket knife... Man, I thought bullies at my school were bad. I know it's Stephen King and he always writes some pretty weird stuff, but he seemed a little out of place. Speaking of out of place, there were some moments with the kids that seemed out of place. I won't tell you what scenes in particular, but I raised my arms a bit and shook my head to my cousin sitting next to me in the theatre and we both said, "What the hell am I watching?" So overall, it's hard to rate this movie because I don't like horror movies, I will never watch this movie again but I enjoyed watching it. I go to movies to escape reality, be entertained and have fun, not be extremely uncomfortable or scared shitless. So I'll give it a 3/5. A positive review for a film that I enjoyed enough, but will never watch again. Again, not a horror guy so this film isn't exactly in my wheelhouse (Or in horror film's cases, a haunted house or a slaughterhouse).
