Fight Club - Review

Pretentious. That is the first word that crossed my mind while watching this movie. Like, holy crap this is one of the most pretentious movies I have ever seen. Also, before I continue this review, I understand that many people love this movie and will hate me for not liking it. So for you guys, you can e-mail your hateful comments and concerns to me at idontgiveashit@fightclub.com. Now that we got that out of the way, I can talk about Fight Club, or at least the hype surrounding it and my experience with it. Throughout my four years of film school, there have been many films that have been recommended to me or films that I haven't seen that people would automatically lose their minds. Jaws is one of them (I'll watch it eventually. Don't worry), and so was Fight Club. I never watched it until being out of film school for 5 months and I can finally see why many pretentious hipsters like this movie because this movie is pretentious as hell. From the way Edward Norton narrates, the way Brad Pitt speaks, the whole "I'm so badass" attitude from Mrs. Tim Burton, the wacky filmmaking style, and cutaways, it just screamed to me, pretentious. However, I did not hate this movie and I thought the twist at the end was rather clever although predictable. Can a twist be both? Eh, who cares. I'm calling the twist both. I'm assuming most of you have seen this movie already, but if you haven't, all I can say is, don't get caught in the hype. I know this is a very unpopular opinion, but I think David Fincher has better films to offer.
