Monsters, Inc. - Review

When scrolling through my old reviews, I couldn't believe that I had reviewed Monsters University, but I had never reviewed the original. Now, this is another one of those movies that were sitting in the "I loved it as a kid but I don't know how well it holds up" pile. Movies like Hercules and Aladdin still held up all these years, while films like Tarzan... not so much. So it's always kind of freaky to me to watch a movie like this and then review it because it seems like people get the most upset over ratings for movies like this. However, Monsters, Inc. is still a great movie. I remember my family owned a Dodge Caravan with a DVD Player in the back. One movie we would watch over and over again was Monsters, Inc. So watching this again, I knew almost every line of dialogue. But like most kids films, you always pick up on little details here and there that you missed. Like I noticed that Sully and Mike really do talk how men in a warehouse/factory workplace talk to each other. Now, do I think that Billy Crystal is the funniest character Disney has ever put on screen? No. Is Boo the cutest character ever put on screen? ... maybe. What really makes this movie work are the characters. Not only are they funny, but they are extremely likable. If your movie has extremely likable characters, the plot really doesn't matter because you want to see these characters succeed no matter what happens. It does have one hell of an exciting scene in where Sully and Mike are jumping through doors in their warehouse and being transported to different cities in the human world in an exciting chase climax. Also, Pixar is just great thinking of these ideas. Monsters coming out of your closet and scaring children got twisted into a Monster company that provides energy to their world. That is just such a genius idea. I know most of you guys around my age grew up with this movie, and I am here to say that it still holds up pretty well! Thumbs up from me!
