Sleepy Hollow - Review

Halloween is around the corner! And what better way to celebrate by watching some 'Halloween' themed movies! I remember watching this movie when I was a kid and enjoying it around Halloween time. However, ever since then it has been sitting on my shelf in VHS form. This year though, with me being out of school for the first time since 1999. I figured this would be a perfect opportunity to revisit this film once again and see if it holds up. Well, I got some good news, it holds up pretty well. Is it a masterpiece? Not really. It's just an enjoyable Halloween movie. By saying 'Halloween' movie, I mean that it has all the tropes of Halloween that I remember growing up. The creepy haunted town, the jack-o-lanterns, spiders, witchcraft, an undead type of monster, all that good stuff. Just with a lot more blood. Don't worry though, this movie isn't scary, it is meant to be campy. The film is purposefully full of dark, greyish tones and a dark, abysmal setting. Therefore, when the headless horseman chops of a head, the blood really stands out. Yes, it looks like a cartoon, but it is meant to be a classic spooky tale with realism thrown out the window. And since this is a Tim Burton movie, of course, Johnny Depp is front and centre. I love him in everything he is in and here is no exception. I even like the supporting cast. They have that British campiness to them that makes this movie oh so fun. If you are someone who, like me, loves to celebrate Halloween but isn't a fan of horror films like Paranormal Activity and Saw and wants a little bit more edginess then The Nightmare Before Christmas or Mickey Mouse's House of Mouse Halloween Special, then Sleepy Hollow is the film for you. I will definitely be watching this movie again next year!
