The World's End - Review

After re-watching Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz recently, it was only fitting to complete the trilogy with The World's End. While it's not as good as Hot Fuzz, it's still a very entertaining movie. Better than Shaun of the Dead I'd say. I just love seeing Simon Pegg and Nick Frost together on screen in different movies playing different roles. Here, Simon Pegg plays the man who is constantly living in the past and unable to grow up and Nick Frost plays the stern, business first, fun later type of person. Very different from their Shaun of the Dead roles. What makes this film work for me is that it takes the first half of the movie to set up the characters, their relationships and the setting extremely well, therefore, when the town's alien/robot creatures start to attack our heroes, even though the film's genre completely changed out of nowhere, we don't really care because we want to continue the adventures of these characters. The dynamic between all of them are great and they do talk like how people talk after not seeing each other in a long time. At least, that's how guys talk after not seeing each other for a while. Talking about all the crazy times they got drunk in high school, all the girls they chased after, all that good stuff. Like I said earlier, it quickly turns from a comedy about a group of friends reuniting via a pub crawl, to an alien invasion movie. The first time I watched it, 4 years ago, for some reason I wasn't really feeling the whole alien bit. Now, I thought the action scenes were fantastic, the setup was clever and even during those parts, it's still funny. I watched this film with my grandmother and she thought it was absolutely fantastic. If you can't take her recommendation, take mine. The World's End is a really fun time!
