Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Since I am dressing up as Captain Kirk for Halloween, I thought it would be most logical to continue my on-going trek to watch the original Star Trek films. Now, I am nowhere near to being a Trekkie. That's why I brought my buddy with me who is a Trekkie along for the ride with the previous three Star Trek films. He acted as my guide through the often confusing and challenging yet somehow extremely entertaining world of Star Trek. However, for this entry, I really didn't need a guide along the way because this is the most absurd Star Trek film that I have seen, yet it is the funniest, most relatable, and perhaps my favourite out of the original six films. Now, I have said this in every single one of my Star Trek reviews, but man there is some magic in this series. From the score, to the aesthetic, to the very idea of space travel, Star Trek has this Tomorrowland like whimsy to it. Also, Leonard Nimoy is just so awesome to watch and a bit of a side note, that voice is just so soothing. So it starts off like every other Star Trek movie. Space mumbo jumbo, weird alien probe threatens Star Fleet and Kirk and friends need to come to the rescue. However, this time the threat is hitting planet Earth. Right off the bat, you immediately get more invested in the story because it's place that I hope everyone reading this is familiar to. And yes, time travel is the name of the game in this movie. The destination, San Fransisco, 1986. The role reversal is now in place for an entertaining ride. Before, what was strange to us the audience was familiar to them, the crew of the Enterprise. Now, what is strange to them is familiar to us and it leads to some great fish out of water comedy. Yes, an original Star Trek film is actually funny! Just Captain Kirk's reaction to certain things going on around him are priceless. So add that Star Trek magic into a world that we know and a plot that is totally stupid, yet entertaining and you have a great time at the movies. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home may be my favourite Star Trek film out of the original six films. Let's see what The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country have in store!
