Looper - Review

I have heard the constant argument from people that Hollywood no longer makes original movies. Everything is either based on a book, movie, tv show, toy, comic, video game, you name it. Reboots, sequels, spin-offs, I will admit that they are everywhere. However, a movie came out five years ago that I missed in theatres that looked incredibly unique and original. That film was Looper. I finally gave it a watch and I was extremely impressed. Not only was it an original film that wasn't directly based on other source material, but it was extremely clever. Now, people may complain that this movie isn't "entirely" original and that it has many of the same plot elements as the Terminator. To them I say that nothing is 100% original and there can always be elements of older stories found in new ones. What Looper does is take those elements and twists them into new and interesting ideas. The mob has time travel at their disposal and are able to send the people they need to be killed back in time to die. Therefore, the people getting killed, technically don't exist. I'm hooked. Add in the likable anti-hero in Joseph Gordon Levitt and you got yourself a sick science fiction movie. Not to mention Bruce Willis playing an older version of our main character as the villain. You don't see that every day. Two versions of the same person as protagonist and antagonist. Jeff Daniels also appears as a mob boss but I can't un-see him from Dumb and Dumber. Emily Blunt is great as always and the story as I mentioned before is extremely gripping and entertaining. If you are looking for something unique and new to watch, Looper is a good one to check out.
