Thor - Review

I haven't seen the first Thor movie for about 3-4 years now. I just remember it being a standard action-adventure superhero movie. Nothing too special but it entertained me. Now, with the new Thor movie coming out, I thought I would watch the original Thor again since I have not reviewed it yet. What I got was actually a superhero movie that focused on the character and the change he has to go through. Now you'd think that basically every movie ever needs a main character that has to change, but if you really think about it, not many superhero films have a story that is entirely about a character's transformation. In this case, the story is about Thor changing from a selfish, egotistical person with a lust for power to a selfless person who uses his power for the good of others. Pretty simple change that you have seen in almost 99% of movies, but it was nice to go back to a time where not every single superhero movie needed to set-up 5 different sequels and spin-offs and such. Three-act structure, a villain with a clear motive, a character who needs to change in order to stop such villain and a love connection that while not entirely complex, is nice to see. And while the CGI in some places does look dated, Asgard, as well as some of the action sequences, do look visually stunning. I guess I am getting better and better at spotting CGI and it not entirely providing that "wow" factor as it once did. However, the giant set-pieces don't drive the story, the characters and their actions do. Thor is greedy and to be honest, a bit of an asshole at one point. His actions because of his mindset dictate the story. Loki finding out about his past, torments him inside and therefore, he acts upon it. You really do feel like emotions and desires drive the story as opposed to simple bad guy wants to take over the world nonsense. Events don't feel forced is what I am trying to say. Quick little side note, ever notice how a large portion of the film is shot while the camera is on a tilt? Most of the movie feels slanted and it can get rather annoying. My cousin and I were joking around and trying to point out whenever the camera did it. Overall, a solid superhero film that shows us what a true hero is all about. Much better than the second one that's for sure.
