Murder on the Orient Express - Review

I have always been a fan of movies where a bunch of people are confined to one place (a building, boat, train, plane, etc.) and something goes terribly wrong and everyone is a suspect but we the audience can only assume. Murder on the Orient Express is one of those movies and it is rather entertaining. Kenneth Branagh is our detective and he is wonderfully colourful and fun, yet incredibly good at his job and stern when he needs to be. His constant desire for perfection allows him to find the imperfections in suspect's testimonies and the flaws in the evidence. He is a good character to have as "the straight man" as you will. The rest of the characters are up for interrogation and it is nice to see some familiar faces on screen once again. Like Daisy Ridley for instance. It was refreshing to see her in something that is not Star Wars related and she gives a good performance as well as the other actors. The CGI looks great, the score is not too bad and the mystery is a rather intriguing one. There is nothing really bad I can say about this movie. However, nothing really elevates it either apart from all the other murder mysteries out there. I guess when I found out who was behind the murder in the first place, I was rather disappointed. The movie felt anti-climatic. In something like The Usual Suspects or even a movie like Flightplan, the twist/reveal had my jaw on the floor. Here, it was more like a shrug while I thought, "... yeah okay." I didn't see it coming or even think that that might be the case, but it didn't leave me satisfied. That is the only real downside to this movie, and that is that there isn't anything too particularly special about it. There isn't a reason for me to tell you to run out to the theatre right away to see this or really even watch it again. I did enjoy myself while watching it and it was a fun night at the movies. I suggest if you really do want to see it, then I'm sure you will enjoy yourself. If you are on the fence, wait for a Netflix release. Not a bad movie by any means just didn't blow me away is all. One word description = enjoyable.
