Sing Street - Review

People have always told me that I have an old soul and my love for 80's music has definitely made that a compelling argument. So here comes Sing Street, a movie about a boy from Ireland that wants to start a band that plays 80's music to impress a girl. If this premise isn't written exactly for me, I don't know what is. Could you imagine if what it took to impress women was to sing 80's songs? I'd much prefer it than trying to rap to them. But I digress, how does the movie hold up. The answer is incredibly well. While you've seen the whole, "boy chase girl out of his league while she likes a guy out of her league" scenario before, this one makes it feel fresh. Is it because of the Irish accents? Is it because it's 80's music? Could be, but the movie has much more going for it than it is a story we've seen before just with Irish 80's kids. What really impressed me was the performance of Jack Reynor. You may remember him from the huge stinker that was Transformers: Age of Extinction where he was completely forgettable. However, here he is excellent. He brings a lot of raw emotion to what could have been a very light-hearted movie. While all the kids have their funny moments that get some laughs out of the audience, the relationship between our main character Conor and Ann and the family struggles of Conor and Brendan (Jack Reynor) give this film some emotional weight that you wouldn't think to be in a film about a dorky kid starting a band to impress a girl. More than meets the eye with this film and if you love 80's music like I do, give it a watch. It's a good one!
