Coco - Review

This is the power of Disney. I knew absolutely nothing about this movie except that it was from Disney and Pixar and about some little Mexican kid who played guitar. That's it. I didn't watch any trailers or see any commercials. So I had no idea what to expect, but since Moana was a disappointment to me, my hopes weren't too high. I'm telling you right now that this is probably the most beautiful Pixar film I have ever seen. Just the amount of detail that has gone into the world and the characters and how the colours seem to suck you into the world, oh it's fantastic. You know what else is fantastic? Basically everything, so I don't even know where to start because I don't want to spoil it too much. I want people to go into this movie not really knowing what to expect and be extremely entertained. But, this is a review and I can't simply say "go see it", I need to give it some context. The music is spectacular. I like that this isn't really a musical even though there are songs in it. The main character sings songs because he wants to play for an audience, it's not like something like Moana where the character is feeling something and she simply sings about how she is feeling. Our little Miguel is a performer and I love the Mexican flare that all the songs have. One thing I also really liked about Coco was that it stared a kid that wasn't annoying and constantly making jokes, he was a kid who had a passion and would go to the distance to achieve it. Now I know we've seen the whole, "parents think what the kid wants is bad for them" storyline before in countless stories, but you go along with it anyway because we like this kid. He isn't constantly trying to make the audience laugh with stupid humour, he is motivated and his humour fits his character. I also love how Disney can still keep me guessing in terms of, I think a twist is coming, and then it doesn't happen or I think I can play out the rest of the movie in my head, and then the movie throws another twist at me that I really don't see coming. Because I watch so many movies, it has become quite easier to predict stories and how they are going to play out, especially in kid's movies. However, a new movie will come along that not only give me a story with a unique twist I haven't seen before, but it will entertain me from start to finish with likable characters, an amazing world, great songs, and even some moments where I almost teared up. Coco is one of those movies. I don't want to say anymore because I want to do you all justice by not spoiling any major plot points because this is the first Disney movie in a while that isn't a sequel that you need to see on the big screen.
