Dumb and Dumber - Review

The last film I reviewed was Mystic River and in that review, I mention that people's attention span is getting shorter and shorter and that watching thought-provoking movies are more important now than ever. With that being said, you still need some good ol' dumb humour to cheer you up once in a while. That's where a film like Dumb and Dumber comes into play. This movie is so hilarious. I could end the review right there because that's all that really needs to be said. Judging from the title, this is not a comedy where the jokes are dipped in layers of irony and wordplay and the jokes are very intelligently put together. No sir, this is a comedy about dumping a whole bottle of TurboLax into another man's coffee and waiting to see what happens next. Plus, it's not the classic wacky character and straight man duo you see in many comedies (especially road trip ones), here is two of the biggest idiots put to screen playing off each other and it is pure gold. There is some much bigger grand plot about money and a ransom and blah blah blah. I didn't care about the actual plot of the film back when I was a kid and I don't care now. It doesn't matter. You don't need to really know what the "bad guys" motivation is to get a kick out of the movie, you just need to be willing to laugh at two idiots eating an extremely hot pepper and acting like complete brainless idiots when they realize how spicy it is. This is a movie I throw into the "VHS Tape at the Lake" pile. For those of you new to my reviews, that pile includes the movies you would watch on an old VHS tape when you're in an old cabin with a wood TV out by a lake. Or if you find yourself down and depressed and just need a reason to smile today. Dumb and Dumber is a great turn-your-brain-off and laugh movie. One of the best!
