Darkest Hour - Review

Gary Oldman. I could end the review right there. You see the rating, and all you read is Gary Oldman. He transforms! I don't think I have seen a performance this fantastic since Johnny Depp in Black Mass. If you close your eyes, you can hear the Gary Oldman voice just a little, but he sucks you into the movie with his performance and you really feel like you are watching Winston Churchill on screen. Cliche to say, but it's true. This is definitely one of those Oscar-bait acting extravaganza films, but it's entertaining and you never feel like the film is talking down at you. Sometimes with Oscar bait films, I can tell that the actors know that they are all going to get oscar nominations and the whole film feels very condescending. Like, "Yes! Watch how good we can act!" as opposed to watching characters in a story. American Hustle is a film that comes to mind when describing the typical pretenious oscar bait film. This film definitely is a machine to attempt to get Gary Oldman to the oscars, but it feels like more than that because it's not only based on a true story, but a very important story too. It's quite remarkable that so many people disliked him, even in his own party and how he was able to cope with becoming Prime Minister in Britain's... Darkest Hour. If you are a war buff, want to see some good acting or just want to see a good film about an important man in history, then check out Darkest Hour. My fingers are crossed for this awards season!
