Oh, Spielberg, you did it again. You lure me in with my favourite actor of all time, Tom Hanks, with a premise that I find somewhat interesting and you give me a snooze fest. Bridge of Spies in 2015, and now The Post. I'll say right off the bat that my biggest problem with this movie is that it takes an interesting story with an interesting premise, but I feel like the story focused on the wrong people. Here is a story about one man who was in Vietnam during the war and wanted to tell the public the truth about why the United States went there and why they didn't want to pull out of the war. He goes through drastic measures to do it like stealing top-secret documents and copying them and giving them to various newspapers. Now that is very interesting and with a great director, this can be a very great story. However, we are focusing on Meryl Streep's character and Tom Hanks' character discussing their problems at the Washington Post and how they want a big story and how they have family problems and... I'm falling asleep just writing this stuff. This movie was boring. Some critics can look past it because of the fantastic acting jobs by our main two leads, but honestly, I don't get it. Why would I want to see people "act well" if they are discussing or partaking in actions that we don't care about or that are flat out uninteresting? When they are all in a room and discussing the magnitude of what might happen if they publish the stories, then I can appreciate both Hanks and Streep's acting because I care about what is going on and I can relate to how much they care too. But when I have to watch Meryl Streep sit on her granddaughter's bed and talk to her daughter about how she became who she was today, I don't see anything furthering the story, I just see a director saying, "Okay Meryl, win an Oscar! Act!" I'm sorry, but that's not interesting to me. When the story deviated away from both those characters and was focusing on the actual documents and how they are getting moved around, it got interesting. When I see Streep and Hanks, I just saw two actors try to out-act one another. I would not recommend this movie unless the Oscar bait "watch me act" movie appeals to you. I like Steven Spielberg, I like Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep isn't my favourite for the reasons I listed above, and I like this kind of genre and subject material, but it came across as slow and boring. Total letdown.
