Lady Bird - Review

Looking at posters and trailers for this film, I didn't think I was going to like it. Now, if you have been reading some of my other reviews or have been a friend of mine for any amount of time, you would know that I am a major fan of the teenage comedy genre, but I am not a fan of the so-called Indie teenage flick because most of them I have seen tend to be pretentious movies that treat the audience like idiots and they normally star a bratty, unlikeable teen as the protagonist. This film is about a girl who is growing up in a not so healthy home life and goes to a Catholic school and I could immediately see how this film would attempt to be so "edgy" by having the film just bash the idea of religion for an hour and a half. However, it didn't go that route. In fact, this film didn't seem pretentious at all. It definitely did not feel like a Mean Girls or a Clueless or any other teenage Hollywood film about a girl finding her identity in life, it felt much more low-budget which actually made it feel more real. All of these characters talk like how almost every teenager I know talks. At least when I was a teenager growing up. These characters aren't obsessed with wearing Yeezy's and Supreme T-Shirts and listening to crappy rap music like Gucci Gang, thank goodness. Not only did these characters and surroundings feel very real, they were also hilarious! Having the football coach direct the school play, teenagers doing normal teenage things like staying out late after Thanksgiving dinner and getting high and suddenly having the urge to eat a ton of popcorn. This is teenage life. However, the film is more about the relationship between "Lady Bird" and her mother which feels, I'm going to use this word a ton in this review, real. I think of the movie I, Tonya which had an extremely harsh relationship between Tonya and her mother, but you can definitely feel that the whole relationship is very "Hollywood" or dramatized. Here, I can definitely say that I know people who have had these arguments with their parents or kids and it is extremely relatable. Also, you don't tend to be on one character's side through it all. Normally when watching an argument unfold, you tend to "pick a side" if you will and often roll your eyes when the opposing arguer says something that doesn't match your beliefs or is just extremely stupid. Here, you understand both viewpoints between all the characters who argue in this movie. It's real. You may ask though, "Why would I want to watch a teenage girl argue with everyone? Wouldn't it just be depressing the whole time?" Nope. This film brings in comedy to the mix that makes it extremely enjoyable to watch. Lady Bird is definitely not your typical teenage comedy/drama, but it's one of the better ones out there for sure!
