Red Sparrow - Review

I'll admit that I was a bit hesitant to see this movie. The trailers looked okay but something about a spy thriller being released in March smelled fishy to me. I don't know, it just seems to me that these type of movies are normally released in the fall. But, I bit the bullet and decided to use some of my free points at my local theatre to see it and I enjoyed what I saw. However, I did look away from the screen quite a bit while watching it. Something I don't normally do. Now, I don't really watch the gore-porn horror movies because I don't do gore outside of war movies, so seeing it here was pretty disturbing. That is a perfect word to describe this movie, disturbing. Not only was the gore pretty shocking to see, but the uncomfortable nudity. Jennifer Lawrence is trained to be a Russian spy who uses her body and seduction to extract information and the training process makes you really uncomfortable. But I give props to Jennifer Lawerence for doing a role like this. This is probably my favourite role of hers outside of the X-Men franchise. Plus Joel Edgerton does a great job in the movie too and he has great chemistry with Jennifer Lawerence. This movie is also full of twists and turns and it's a story where you never quite know where it's headed or where the allegiance of Jennifer Lawerence's character lies. Is she secretly wanting to get out of the Russian government and be free from being a Sparrow? Or is she just manipulating the Americans, and the audience, to make them think she wants out. You never know what side she is on. However, that is both interesting and a bit confusing and annoying at the same time. My best way to recommend this movie is if you like the movie Focus with Will Smith and Margot Robbie. Or any other movie where the plot revolves around characters keeping secrets and conning other people into doing or saying certain things. Overall, I liked what I saw and I was glad to see it in the theatre. Won't be seeing again anytime soon, but happy to say that I have seen it.
