Hot Rod - Review

This movie is famous in my neck of the wood because almost every single scene of this movie takes place on a street where I grew up in. The pool I took my first swimming lessons in, my high school, the skating rink where I played hockey, the streets we would walk at lunchtime to the local McDonalds and the houses of classmates are all prevalent here in this movie and I'll be honest, it was weird and yet also a treat to see. However, aside from that. I hated this movie. What is a comedy supposed to do? I think that the sole purpose of a comedy is to make you laugh. This film was only able to make me laugh three times. I'm sorry but that doesn't cut it. I laughed once at a failed stunt attempt, but after many other jokes exactly like it, it got old real fast. I laughed when he fell down the mountain only because it was so ridiculous on how far he was falling. And lastly, I laughed when the film decided to go full strange with the town singing a John Farnham song. It was so bizarre, it was hilarious. Other than that, you can bet that I wasn't laughing at Andy Samberg's antics. He was absolutely terrible. Not only was he unconvincing in every single scene he was in, but worst of all, he wasn't charismatic. Add on top of that, the whole reason the plot exists is that he wants to do stunts to raise enough money for a cause that we don't care about for a character we hate. Rod is trying to raise money to save his step-dad. I would be fine with that if the step-dad didn't hate our main character and treat him like garbage in almost every scene he is in. So with a character who is unlikeable trying to complete a task we don't care about with a group of idiots we don't like all trying to save a character who we hate, you have a recipe for disaster. I'm never watching this movie again.
