Avengers: Infinity War - Review

This is the most intense Marvel movie ever. When watching it, it reminded me of the last Harry Potter movie because think about it, there are quite a few similarities. A movie franchise that spans exactly 10 years, with characters you've grown up with all in a final battle against a seemingly unbeatable opponent. Meaning, the stakes have never been higher. Right off the bat, when Thanos's followers show up on earth, the tone just feels scarier. Like, there is no time to F-around. This is Thanos we are talking about. Which brings me to my only issue with the movie and I realize that I am completely alone here. Marvel has made a name for itself for constantly having movies with a fun tone. With that comes comedy. Now, comedy in superhero movies is nothing new, however, ever since Guardians of the Galaxy, it seems we need our superhero movies to be downright hilarious in order for the audience to enjoy it. However, think about this. Would these jokes that constantly get a big laugh from the audience work in just a normal comedy? Would the scenario of Chris Pratt randomly dancing to distract someone be just as funny if it was in a rom-com about this businessman falling in love with his boss at a beach party or any other random plot like that? I don't think it would. To be completely honest, there was this one woman in the theatre laughing so hard at every joke in this movie and all I was thinking is, "Come on lady, it's not THAT funny." Maybe I'm just cynical, but when we're making a movie about an alien wiping out half the universe, then I think maybe a quip here and there is all you should need. But of course, in this movie where half the universe is at stake, we need to make room for the Guardians of the Galaxy to make tons and tons of lame jokes. Thankfully, when the serious moments happen, they do drop the goofiness and get to business. Speaking of getting down to business, the action has so much more weight to it this time because we finally have a villain that seems to be a legitimate threat. Very few times in this Cinematic Universe was I thinking to myself, "this villain seems way too powerful! How are they going to get out of this." Here, the villain finally, after 18 films, takes centre stage. I keep hearing that a superhero movie is only as good as it's villain. While I can think of plenty of examples where I really enjoyed the movie even though the villain wasn't particularly interesting or memorable, but thinking of superhero movies as a whole, my favourites of all time have amazing villains. Thanos is not only super powerful but is menacing, scary, diabolical, even sarcastic. If you feel the urge to jump through the screen and into the movie just to punch the villain in the face or push them off a cliff, then you know that they did a good job with their villain. And that's about it in terms of things to say without spoiling it. You already know if you're going to see this movie. Just be prepared for the drive home if you have young children...
