The Fast and Furious franchise has completely changed over the years. Funny to think that a film about drag racers on the streets of LA has now turned into a billion dollar franchise that feels more like Mission: Impossible. A big contributor to that was the inclusion of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
As far as I am concerned, the Fast & the Furious is now Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's franchise and you can completely see that in this film. To be honest, they should have called this movie, "Fast and Furious Presents Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jason Statham.
This movie is udderly ridiculous and also a ton of fun. The charisma and comedic timing between The Rock and Jason Statham is unexpected but works surprisingly well giving the film tons of laughs and the addition of Idris Elba gives the film some added credibility. Plus, he is totally loving every minute he is on screen. Hannah Kirby also holds her own as an action badass in a movie solely made to showcase both alpha lifestyles of Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.
I should also mention that the story is not the reason you see this movie. It is recycled, surface level and ultimately laughable, but that is why it's so enjoyable because the movie knows exactly what it is. It knows that you want to see some action, some comedy and some charming actors argue with each other. If that is what you are looking for, or if you are a fan of the Fast and the Furious franchise, you can't go wrong with this movie.
And for those Fast and Furious purists, don't worry. This film does still pay homage to the original themes and values of the original films with Paul Walker. And one can't forget cheesy monologues about family.
