Layer Cake - Review

We live in a current state of big action blockbusters constantly trying to "out-epic" each other, meanwhile sometimes you can find the most enjoyment in the simplest of movies. Enter Layer Cake. I was recommended this movie based only on two facts. One, I love James Bond and two, I love the song "Ordinary World - Duran Duran". I watched the trailer and heard that classic song and I was hooked.

Now I will admit, when I watched it back in my first year in film school, I wasn't too impressed. I honestly don't remember what the exact reason was. Maybe I was sad over a girl that day. Who knows, but the film left enough of an impression to warrant a second viewing 6 years later and I am totally glad I did.

This story is nothing new. We have seen endless crime and gangster flicks that it is almost impossible to see a story we haven't seen before. What matters in that case is the style you present it in and Matthew Vaughn's style is one I really enjoy. Sleek, badass, and ultimately British, Layer Cake offers a solid gangster story in a stylish way.
