Twister - Review

Twister is one of those movies where my film school side of my brain says no, but my movie loving side of my brain says yes. On paper, this movie is a "disaster". A cliched storyline about a divorced couple being brought together because of some natural element, a ton of unnecessary characters, a story structure that is very rinse and repeat and some effects that do not age well. This movie sucks right? Well, the side of my brain that wants to be entertained and simply have fun takes over. Now I will say that if the problems I mentioned earlier are dealbreakers for you, I would say maybe skip Twister. However, if you are looking for a fun time with some schlock, then Twister is the movie for you.

First of all, this film just screams the 1990s. Everything from the effects, the cinematography, the costumes, the music, it truly is a time capsule. Plus having Bill Paxton as the lead actor just adds to the 90's nostalgia even more. Speaking of Bill Paxton, he is the perfect "every man" actor and in this movie, he is extremely likable along with his co-star Helen Hunt. They make this movie watchable. Plus, some of the Twister scenes are still pretty intense and extremely fun to watch, especially when the effects get practical. Looking back now, some of the effect definitely look dated, but I'm sure that at the time they looked phenomenal.

Either way, if you want some 90's cheese, then Twister is a fun time. If you want something with substance, maybe look elsewhere.
