Hustlers - Review

A Scorsese movie with strippers. What I mean by that is that this film has the classic scorsese formula in terms of it's story structure. Young newcomer of some profession makes friends with the master and together, they find a new angle to take in the profession that is morally unethical or illegal and it takes them to the top. However, greed and pride are ultimately their downfall.

But like I have said many times, as long as you have likable and charismatic characters, you can show me a story I have seen a million times before because through the characters I get emotionally invested in the story. Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez give great performances and the movie did give me some laughs and even almost made me shed a tear.

I also like how this film tackles toxic femininity and how women take take advantage of men too. However, in this social climate, I can understand how this movie will be considered empowering because it shows women break the law in order to steal from men.

Regardless, I liked this movie because of the basic elements which makes a movie watchable. Likable characters with motivation, a story that has been shown before but entertaining and some humour, political awareness and a good soundtrack to boot, I'm giving the thumbs up to Hustlers.
