The Cat in the Hat - Review

So there I was at my buddy Mitch's house watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas. After it was finished, I guess we were in a Dr. Suess mood. We were not sober by the way. The Cat in the Hat was always a story I knew as a kid but I never watched the live-action version. So, we popped it in after the Grinch after the ever so famous, "What?! You haven't seen that?!" line and watched the whole thing. This movie is trash.

Mike Myers is just embarassing in this movie. You can really tell that he is trying real hard to get a laugh out of the audience and all of his jokes fall completely flat. Some of the sexual innuendos get some laughs because of how dumb the jokes are, but I don't consider that to be clever screenwriting. The only joke that I actually thought worked was when he was a hippie and refused to use the word dog, but instead use the term "K-9 American" That actually got a laugh out of me.

One big problem with the comedy though is the costume. Where the Grinch allowed Jim Carrey to be expressive, this costume feels like it's restraining Mike Myers performance.

But the main problem with the movie is that it's just lazy writing. The children learning their lessons are so glossed over due to the fact that we need to focus on the real terrible comedy and the absolutely horrendous child acting. These kids have done better performances, but did the director just forget that he had 2nd takes?

Whatever the case may be, I never want to watch this movie ever again.
